UPDATED: CCAC against Sanitation District fee hike

A proposal to enact Sanitation District fee increases will be presented at the Sanitation District Meeting this week on Tuesday, July 27 at 6:30 p.m.

Single family homes have a Current Sanitation Rate of $198 a year. The Sanitation District is proposing new rates for 2010 at $222 a year, 2011 at $246 a year, 2012 at $270.96 a year and 2013 at $296.04 a year.

Why do they want another 50 percent increase? To "Upgrade sewage-treatment plants in Saugus and Valencia with new water-filtration devices to reduce chloride levels in the river."

But wait, this is just the start. How much will this really cost? If you read last year's Sanitation District proposal it was going to cost 300 percent more, if you read their January 13 letter it is going to cost 4 or 500 percent more, and now their May 18 letter says it will require us to pay $588 per year.

This sounds very much like last year's proposal. In truth, the Sanitation District does not know what it will cost. In their letter they state "The future rates will be more accurately determined in the fourth year when the construction bids are received and all funding sources...are better known."

To protest Sanitation District rates of $600, $800 or $1000 per year, show up at this meeting and let council members know.

The Sanitation District Meeting will be held at City Council Chambers, 23920 Valencia Blvd. First Floor, Santa Clarita 91355.
