Mixing up the rules

In Lois Eisenberg's weekly letter to the editor ("Court jesters," May 3), she tells of her visit to the Santa Clarita Valley Civic Center, where she observed several court cases. She talked of a small-claims case and the "high-priced lawyer."

Unless the rules have changed recently, lawyers (at any price) are not allowed to practice in small-claims court. They can represent themselves or be a witness, but that's about it.

Obviously that excludes the judge pro-tem.
