Student council officers from Pinecrest School, a middle school in Canyon Country, won the Certificate of Excellence from the Honor Student Council School of Excellence.

Pinecrest School's student council officers have been awarded the Certificate of Excellence by the Honor Student Council School of Excellence for their devotion to improving their school and the community.

The recent award for the Canyon Country school recognizes the students' efforts in several charity events, including food drives and clothing donations.

When they found out they won the award, the middle school students felt as though their hard work had paid off, said council president Emily Vosen.

"It was very exciting," she said. "It was exciting to win the award knowing that we're doing more to help our community."

As far as leaving an indelible mark on Pinecrest itself, Vosen said that the student council has created a memory wall for eighth-graders. Starting this year, every graduating eighth grade student will sign his or her name on the wall.

Student Council historian Alexis Akpodiete said a memory wall will encourage fond recollections of the students' time at Pinecrest.

"When you come back in a few years and see your name on the wall, that'll be awesome," the 13-year-old said.

Council advisers, fourth-grade teacher Cam Woermley and middle school science teacher Dan Waybright, said that, for the most part, the majority of energy comes from the members working together.

"They're enthusiastic about whatever we have going on," Woermley said. "They're always jazzed."

Waybright echoes the sentiment.

"We have so many really awesome members of student council," he said. "We throw fuel on the fire and let them go."
