Put another one on the board for Valencia.

The Vikings girls basketball team played for the championship in the Santa Clarita Girls Varsity Basketball Summer Shootout on Saturday.

The Vikings were victorious in their 47-44 win over Knight High School of Palmdale.

Valencia went undefeated in the tournament having defeated Quartz Hill and the Wildcats of West Ranch before seeing Knight in the finals.

While some Foothill League coaches prefer not to play league teams during the summer, Vikings head coach Jerry Mike welcomes it.

"I love it," Mike said. "I like doing it. We know each other and there are no secrets. It's good for them to play each other."

Valencia defeated West Ranch, who finished the tournament in fourth place, on Friday to make it to Saturday's Championship game.

Mike was satisfied with his team's performance through out the tournament.

"We played very good," Mike said. "We got better each game."

In Saturday evening's game Valencia was led by senior-to-be Starla Wright.

Wright finished with 12 points and five rebounds.

The 5-foot-10 forward has been the consistent points leader for the Vikings squad followed by guard Lindsey Hill who finished the game with 11 points and four assists.

The Vikings executed on the offensive collapse of the Hawks early on.

Knight's multiple turnovers and missed lay-ups ultimately cost the team in the end.

With 17 seconds left in the game and the Vikings ahead by one point Vikings guard Jenny Lentz missed her free throws giving the Knights and opportunity to win the game.

However, the Hawks missed an easy lay up and put the ball back into the hands of Hill with two seconds left on the clock.

Hill was fouled and made both free throws at the other end of the court to secure the win for the Vikings.

Other Vikings contributors were Lauren Spargo who had eight points and six rebounds, Danielle Cavanagh had seven points, and Jenny Lentz finished with six.

The Vikings will compete in the Burroughs tournament and host a tournament of their own before wrapping up their summer action.
