Whole Foods is thinking locally today.

From noon to 3 p.m. the organic supermarket is hosting Local Vendor Day, an event held several times a year to promote some of the independent, regional makers with which the company partners.

Today, marketing supervisor Tina Landrum said shoppers will have the chance to chat with Ed Begley, Jr., actor and noted environmentalist. Whole Foods has carried his Begley’s Best line of household cleaners for several years.

Landrum noted that Begley makes no profit from his products. Once the manufacturing costs have been covered, the rest of the money goes to various environmental organizations.

“I make a living from acting,” Begley said during a 2007 interview with The Signal. “So I don’t take a salary from Begley’s Best.”

Begley’s products are vegan-based, nontoxic and biodegradable.

Seeing it as “a more ecologically responsible” thing to do, Landrum said Whole Foods partners with a variety of regional vendors, who produce everything from cheese, to cleaning products, to a woman who created a “carnival sauce” of ketchup, mustard and relish. “We keep adding new local vendors,” she said.

Whole Foods Market is at 24130 Valencia Blvd., at the corner of McBean Parkway.
