Center of excellence?

The Signal's editorial "Getting serious about the hospital" (May 9), chose the wrong "money quote" to highlight.

The biggest issue here today about the hospital is why the words "center of excellence" do not immediately leap to mind in connection with the hospital.

The strongest praise The Signal editorial board could summon itself to utter about the hospital is: "In 10 years, Newhall Memorial has transformed itself from a hospital wracked in bankruptcy to a medical center that continues to makes strides in what it offers the community."

In the scheme of things, this is at best faint praise of the hospital. I assume the editorial board must have internally debated about whether the hospital's progress in the last 10 years could even have been described that strongly.

SCOPE and others can certainly be challenged to lead the charge in fundraising for the additional monies necessary to build a "green" facility. Calling SCOPE names like "no growth zealots," and also likening it to a "gang" do not encourage SCOPE or a similar organization to step up to the plate financially in support of identifying and paying for the extra costs of "green" facilities.

I personally look forward to a Signal editorial about what it would take to make our local hospital a "center of excellence." I trust that editorial's "money quote" would not involve name-calling of any kind.

The Signal might also consider running an occasional ongoing tally of funds/pledges SCOPE has obtained to fund the extra costs of "green" hospital facilities for our valley.
