Today's Highlight in History: On May 15, 1970, just after midnight, Phillip Lafayette Gibbs and James Earl Green, two black students at Jackson State College in Mississippi, were killed as police opened fire during student protests.

Ten years ago: By a 5-4 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out a key provision of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act, saying that rape victims could not sue their attackers in federal court.

Five years ago:
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice paid a surprise visit to Iraq to express support for its new government.

One year ago:
CIA Director Leon Panetta defended the agency against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's charge that she was misled in 2002 about the use of waterboarding.

High school talent show strippers under investigation
PARAMOUNT (AP) - The assistant principal at a California high school has been placed on leave after a campus talent show where male students pranced seductively in underwear and Speedos.

The Paramount Unified School District began an investigation after video of the student performances showed up on YouTube and local television news reports. One performer, Christian Dominguez, says he simply wanted to "pump up" the class at Paramount High School.

But some parents complained.

Superintendent David Verdugo says the performance was inappropriate and the assistant principal who was present has been placed on administrative leave while the district investigates who arranged and managed the acts.

No students have been disciplined.

Photo-taking hiker bitten by bear
GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) - A man was bitten as he was trying to take a picture of a black bear in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, but the injury was minor and did not require medical attention.

The National Park Service said in a release the unidentified man suffered a small puncture wound on his foot after he was bitten on the Laurel Falls Trail to the south of Gatlinburg, Tenn., on Wednesday.

Biologists captured a 60-pound female bear that visitors reported seeing near the trail. As a matter of park policy, bears that have contact or injure people are euthanized.
