The children of the Blessed Kateri Religious Education program donated more than 2,300 gently used books to San Miguel Catholic School in Los Angeles on April 30.

The effort was organized by Valencia teens Daniel Salovich and Allyson Weber, who delivered the books to a grateful San Miguel Principal, Maryann Reynoso, and her 196 students, who range from preschool through eighth-grade.

After a tour of the school, Salovich and Weber had the opportunity to read to attentive first- and sixth-grade students.

“It was such a great experience to see how the books really mattered to the students of San Miguel,” Salovich said.

In March, Salovich and Weber met with the oldest Blessed Kateri kids to encourage community service through book donations.

Receptive to the idea of helping others, the kids brought the message of San Miguel’s book need and communicated it to all the kids in the Blessed Kateri program, as well as their parents.

Soon books began to pour in at a steady pace, until the boxes were overflowing.

Blessed Kateri teens from the Confirmation program added their assistance by sorting and counting the books prior to delivery.

When the kids at Blessed Kateri worked together, they were able to make a significant impact through their efforts and generous book donations, which will in turn provide an avenue to literacy for the students of San Miguel, Salovich said.

Salovich founded the Give Books Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization that creates book drives with kids in schools and youth organizations for donation to children in need at schools, afterschool programs, intervention organizations and other avenues to promote reading literacy, furthering success in school and life. Weber is an active member of the organization.

“Give Books Foundation has allowed me to work with great kids in our community who are eager to participate in community service and willing to give to others,” Weber said.
