The swish of the net and the squeaking of tennis shoes - oh, the sounds of basketball.

Local teams are already gearing up for girls varsity basketball season.

Valencia, Hart and West Ranch are participating in the 2008 Santa Clarita Girls Varsity Basketball Summer Shootout at the College of the Canyons.

Palmdale, Quartz Hill, Notre Dame, Burroughs, and Knight will also be apart of today's action.

The tournament was started in the summer of 2003 by COC women's basketball coach Greg Herrick and assistant coach Harlan Perlman.

Each have been with the COC basketball program for 17 years and the two decided that a summer league for young high school athletes would be of great benefit.

"The players get a chance to work on team work and gives kids a chance that may not see a lot of playing time during the season, a chance to compete for spots," Perlman said.

Playing host to the event has its benefits as well.

"It's a good way to open our gym to local teams and have them play on our campus," he added. "It's a good way for us to see the local talent in the summer."

The tournament also serves as a fundraiser to the Lady Cougar Basketball team.

In years past such sponsors have included Nike and Paul Mitchell.

"I had a ton of products in my cabin that year," Perlman said of the Paul Mitchell sponsorship.

Each of the participating teams has a three game guarantee, and gifts are given to the top team's most valuable player.

Tournament action begins with West Ranch taking on Palmdale at 4 p.m., followed by Valencia playing Quartz Hill at 5 p.m.

Hart will face Burroughs in the last game of the evening at 7 p.m.
