An open house is scheduled for tonight to introduce a kindergarten-readiness program aimed at equipping youngsters for success in the fall, as well as a summer program for children in kindergarten through eighth grade, including those with disabilities.

The kindergarten-readiness program, called “Jumpstart,” will be offered at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and School in Canyon Country from June 21 through July 31 and will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday.

“Jumpstart will introduce students to phonetically based reading, reading decoding and word recognition, problem-solving, hands-on learning and early mathematics,” said Lisa Korell director of Bethlehem School.

The curricula will be taught by trained early-childhood education teachers whose goal is to prepare students to succeed in early education.

The open house is from 6-8:30 p.m. at 27265 Luther Drive in Canyon Country, next to the Edwards Canyon Country Stadium 10 complex.

The summer program is offered by Bethlehem through a partnership with Sandcastles, a nonprofit organization providing afterschool and summer care for children in the Santa Clarita Valley since 1998.

The summer programs are available from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and feature homework assistance, transportation, field trips, classes in dance, Spanish, sign language, gymnastics and other activities.

For more information on Jumpstart or Bethlehem’s preschool programs call (661) 251-6027. For Sandcastles programs, call (661) 251-3182.
