Katie Watson, 14, will go to Interlochen Arts Camp this summer.

Katie Watson, 14, of Canyon Country, has been accepted and will attend the Interlochen Arts Camp in northern Michigan, the world's premier summer arts program for aspiring artists grades 3 through 12.

Watson, the daughter of Sheree La Puma-Watson and Scott Watson, will study visual arts at the camp.

Watson is a freshman at the Academy of the Canyons in Valencia and attends the Art Center College of Design on weekends.

In addition to being a straight-A honor student, Watson performs at least 10 hours of community service each semester.

She has worked for the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, the Los Angeles ASPCA, the Assistance League and the Gentle Barn.

Last year, straight out of eighth-grade, she was honored with a spot at California State Summer School for the Arts, or Innerspark, where she spent a month living and studying visual arts on the California Institute of the Arts campus in Valencia.

In addition to being an artist, Watson plays piano, sings and performs in local theater productions.

Interlochen Arts Camp attracts students, faculty and staff from all 50 U.S. states and more than 40 countries.

These 3,000 artists fill Interlochen's Northwoods campus with an explosion of creativity.

Student artists learn from world-class instructors and produce hundreds of presentations each summer in dance, theater, creative writing, visual arts, music and film. Among the distinguished camp alumni are Norah Jones, singer Josh Groban, opera and concert soprano Jessye Norman, conductor Lorin Maazel, jazz pianist Eldar, actor Anthony Rapp, cartoonist Cathy Guisewite and many more.

Approximately 10 percent of the nation's professional orchestra musicians have roots at Interlochen, and its alumni community has been honored with 90 Grammy Awards.
