May is National Building and Safety Month, and the city of Santa Clarita is celebrating by helping to inform residents about local building and safety practices.

The 2010 Building and Safety Month will highlight four areas of expertise: Energy and Green Building, Disaster Safety and Mitigation; Fire Safety and Awareness; and Backyard Safety.

Building safety and fire prevention codes address all aspects of construction, including structural soundness of buildings, reliability of fire prevention and suppression systems, plumbing and mechanical systems, and energy efficiency and sustainability.

"The city of Santa Clarita's Building and Safety officials work hard to ensure that community members are safe within local structures," said Mayor Laurene Weste. "The city is proud to celebrate National Building and Safety Month and recognize all the effort our Building and Safety staff puts forth toward the well being of the community."

First observed in 1980 as Building and Safety Week, National Building and Safety Month is sponsored by the International Code Council, a membership association dedicated toward building safety, fire prevention, and energy efficiency. The organization develops codes used nationally to construct residential and commercial buildings.
