A Saugus man was killed in a collision at the intersection of Plum Canyon Road and Santa Catarina Road in Saugus on Saturday evening, according to officials.

Jeffrey Laird, 41, of Saugus, was traveling eastbound on Plum Canyon Road and was turning left onto Santa Catarina Road when his Scion xB collided with an oncoming Dodge Durango driven by Garrett Brixon, 19, of Valencia, according to a report from the California Highway Patrol.

Angie Birchfield, a Saugus resident who witnessed the crash, was surprised how people worked together, especially the men who helped take Laird out of his Scion so others could perform CPR.

She said her husband, a firefighter with the state, helped direct traffic, so an ambulance could get through.

Laird died on scene and Brixon was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with major injuries, according to the report.

The rate of speed for both vehicles is unknown, and the crash is still under investigation.

Law enforcement officials were not available to comment on Brixon's condition on Sunday.

If any witness has any further information regarding this collision, please contact Officer Delgado at the California Highway Patrol Newhall Office at (661) 294-5540.
