Kids in the yard

Here are some ideas on how you and the kids can spruce up your backyard without spending a fortune.

  • Find a table and chairs at a garage sale and let the kids make them new for the summer with some leftover paints. Scrub things down and scrape off the loose paint, but don't worry too much about getting it perfect: The idea is to add color for the season and to let the kids have fun.
  • Make an old-fashion tree swing with 1.5-inch-diameter manila rope. You can buy it at the hardware store. It's fantastic to look at and to play with. Tie it securely around a strong tree branch and tie a large knot at the bottom to sit on. Just make sure you have plenty of room to swing in all directions.
  • Buy a wood burning tool, and buy or make a wooden bench. Let the kids have fun - burning their names, hearts, stars, moons, etc. Then stain the bench a bright color.
  • String a hammock between two trees for lots of lollygagging.
  • Birdhouse. You can buy unfinished birdhouses at many stores to make your own. Have fun with the kids decorating it and put it in a focal point of the backyard.
  • Flower boxes. Simple flower boxes can be purchased at the hardware store and then decorated and planted with veggies or flowers.
