Get off the anti-Catholic kick

Editor’s note: The Signal attempted to secure publication rights to Mr. Miller’s speech mentioned below but was unable to do so. The speech in its entirety can be read at www.maltausa.org/files/newsletter_hospitallers_18_stand_up.pdf. Mr. Madery says we didn’t check the facts in our first story; the Archdiocese failed to return phone calls for comment placed over two days’ time.

If it is your intention to create a bias against the Catholic Church, you are doing a very good job.

First, you break a news article without checking the facts. The Archdiocese counters with a full-page ad they paid for explaining the facts.

You were not satisfied; you had to run another front-page article contending Our Lady of Perpetual Help was split on the issue.

This is not a fact. Yes, there were some dissenters. They didn’t know the facts.

Then, for a double whammy, you had to run an article on the opinion page, written by a man from Ann Arbor, Mich., about the church’s sex-abuse scandal. There is no questioning what kind of a paper The Signal has become.

There was a time I felt the paper was fair and unbiased, but not anymore. If you think otherwise, prove it to me by printing the article I am enclosing written by a non-Catholic, Sam Miller, a prominent Jewish businessman in Cleveland.

How about evening up the playing field! Don’t you think you have any Catholic readers? Or don’t you want any?

Another example of you peddling influence was your endorsing the incumbents for City Council. How is someone who has something to offer ever going to serve the community?

I am a longtime subscriber and devoted reader of the opinion page — that is how it has been — please don’t disappoint me by filing this in a waste basket.

Thank you for reading this letter, and I hope we have many more years together. But you better hurry — I’ll be 92 this year.
