Mormons' opposition to gay marriage is hypocritical

On Sunday, June 29, a letter was read at all Mormon worship services worldwide calling on members to contribute their time and money to help pass the California initiative this November that would limit marriage to different-gender couples. The letter, from the Office of the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, said, "The Church's teaching and position on this moral issue are unequivocal. Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God." (Actually, the "State" did it before God did.)

Mormon teaching against black people serving in the Church's priesthood was also unequivocal until it became politically untenable for it to maintain. Church elders received a revelation from God on June 8, 1978 that it was OK to elevate black people to leadership positions. Same with polygamy, which was dropped so Utah could become a state in 1896.

The Mormon Church provided significant financial resources for the successful campaign to pass a constitutional amendment in Hawaii in 1998 allowing the Legislature to regulate marriage there when state court rulings were moving toward an embrace of marriage equality. They also heavily backed anti-gay marriage campaigns in Alaska in 1998 and with the Knight Initiative (Prop. 22) in California in 2000.

I wonder why there has been no real opposition to the Mormon Church's official policy of blatant bigotry against American citizens who happen to be gay or lesbian? Mormon or not, ALL gays and lesbians are rejected by LDS.

Does this mean a return of anti-gay lawn signs blanketing California as they did in 2000? Where were their lawn signs opposing ALL of the recent allegations of pedophilia and sexual abuse in the various Mormon Churches that the media reported recently?

Maybe the Mormons should spend their money tidying up their own homes before spending so much to attack other families. How about lawn signs against DIVORCE - the real threat to different-gender marriages?
