In Obama's defense

Once again, I opened my copy of The Signal today (April 19) to find the entire opinion page filled with invective about that "socialist Obama" and his Democratic cohorts. What balderdash!

Please rest easy. Speaking as a real leftist liberal, I can assure all of you conservatives that President Obama is not one of us. I only wish he was.

The watered-down health insurance reform act recently passed by Congress leaves in place the present flawed private-insurance system. What it does do (to its credit) is add some essential restraints on the rapacious for-profit insurance industry to protect consumers from its most egregious abuses.

Far from a left-wing, socialist scheme, it makes some common sense changes in current unfair insurance-industry practices, while seeking to include many (but not all) uninsured Americans in the system. A single-payer system would have been far preferable.

Still, instead of rejoicing that there will be fewer families suffering without health insurance - or even going bankrupt from medical bills - many of your SCV readers seem to want to view these reforms in a "what's it gonna cost me?" way, rather than being glad to extend a helping hand to those in need of decent coverage.

The job of government is to help its citizens lead safe, worthwhile and productive lives. Over the past decades, we have been able to spend trillions of dollars policing the world and invading countries like Iraq (where we had no business going) without a whimper from conservatives. Quite the contrary. But try to help our own citizens in need and oh, what an outcry!

No wonder America continues to slide downhill. Until we stop trying to run the world on our terms and start investing in our own people instead, this sad trend is destined to continue.
