Shameful decisions

To the William S. Hart Union High School District board: I read with disbelief the elimination decision of the eighth-grade promotions at our local middle schools.

You, as a board, claim it is a financial issue, then parents started raising funds to cover it. Now it is a time issue. How ridiculous.

This is probably the worst decision someone can make, other than restriping Decoro Drive. This is on the same level, only it hits our youth very hard.

Santa Clarita has had a tremendous reputation of having excellent schools and has an excellent student body. You, as a school board, should welcome the recognition of these kids as they advance to our local high schools.

You are penalizing our fine students as they advance, and took away the first real recognition these kids get as they advance to high school.

I am ashamed to say I live in Valencia, and will no longer tell friends and associates how wonderful this area is. The cost to do the promotions and the recognitions for the kids is what Santa Clarita is about.

The city could contribute some of the money from face-lifting the obsolete libraries and use the funds for the real benefit of our community youth.

Shame on you Hart district board, maybe it is time for a real change to get your priorities straight and be proud of our excellent youth and recognize them.

Editor's note: The decision to cancel eigth-grade promotion ceremonies at Hart district schools was made by district administrators with input from parent advisory groups.
