Senior Center offers special 'Qigong' life-force session May 29

SCV Senior Center has offered classes with medical Qigong therapist Carol Benitez since last September to teach techniques that promote healthy living, vitality, and speedy recovery from illness.

This month, Benitez will offer a special Saturday session on May 29 at 1 p.m at the SCV Senior Center to show a DVD featuring Dr. Jerry Alan Johnson, a leading western authority on Medical Qigong that focuses on the prevention and treatment of breast disease from this alternative perspective.

Qigong is the oldest of the four Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) branches and the one on which acupuncture, herbal healing, and Chinese massage are based. For the past several decades Chinese doctors have been using Western research techniques to test and quantify the beneficial results of TCM practices.

While it is sometimes a challenge for the Westerner to understand the function of Qi in the context of Western medicine, many Western hospitals are now incorporating TCM along with Therapeutic Touch, Mindful Meditation, and Reiki.

Some of the health benefits of Medical Qigong include stress reduction, improvements in hypertension, bone density, asthma, and the immune system, as well as benefits in anti-aging. Ms. Benitez, for example, has received advanced training in Medical Qigong therapy for cancer.

The instructional video by Dr. Johnson, covers cancer exercise prescriptions specific to breast cancer disease as used in Chinese hospitals. Johnson is the Dean of Medical Qigong Science at the Five Branches College of TCM in Santa Cruz, California, who is recognized as America's leading authority on Medical Qigong.

As the cost containment of medical care becomes more critical, so interest grows in the promise of Qigong practices; it shifts our focus from battling disease to a cultivation of health.

Qigong is pronounced "chee-gung," and the phrase means loosely "practicing with life force." Its ideal is to listen to the body and never to push the body to its limit; its goal is to release negative emotions, stress, and strengthen the body's internal organs and systems.

Qigong has been found to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, and digestive functions. It can be practiced by all ages and all levels of physical stamina.
