Tighten those belts

Is our economy still in the toilet? Are we still closing schools and laying off teachers, teachers aides and other school employees so the districts can meet their budgets? Is unemployment still at an all-time low?

Hasn't the state stolen our city and county tax money for its own use? Services are being cut all around the state so the governor can get us out of this financial disaster. The schools are being hit hard because of this fiasco.

On several occasions hasn't Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told all taxpayers that we "all" have to suck it up and tighten our economic belts to help him and the state to get out of this fiscal debacle?

Then how is it that the fat-cat politicians in Sacramento don't do the same and try and save the state from financial ruin?

They do just the opposite, such as former Speaker of the State Assembly Karen Bass, who on her last day in office gave her staff ungodly and enormous raises.

And on his first day as the new speaker, John Pérez gave his staff equally enormous and outrageous raises.

They want us, the taxpayers, to tighten our belts, but politicians in Sacramento just go crazy giving their staff these undeserved and totally out-of-balance raises.

What Bass and Pérez have done is a slap in the face of all taxpayers and voters in this great state.

According to the governor, we face a shortfall of $24.3 billion. What have the politicians done to help out the situation? Take care of their own.

All I can say at this point is to remember these names and those of any others who pass out these exorbitant raises at election time.

That's one taxpayer's opinion.
