AP Odd News
Waste not, want not
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Two Columbia sanitation workers who apparently couldn’t stand by and let beer go down the drain allegedly took dozens of cases of expired brew from the city landfill. Police and city supervisors are trying to determine if the salvage was a crime — theft of city property — or just a
policy violation.

“If we determine it’s a police matter, we will take some action,” said Officer Jessie Haden, a Columbia police spokeswoman.

A Columbia distributor, Scheppers Distributing Co., sent 1,500 cases of expired beer to the landfill on April 1 in two shipments. The first shipment was destroyed immediately, but the second, containing about 700 cases of Budweiser and Michelob Ultra, was not.

Margrace Buckler, the city’s human resource director, said two Solid Waste Division workers, who haven’t been identified, brought a city pickup truck to the landfill and hauled off about 50 cases of the beer.

Word spread of the acquisition. A week later, city officials reviewed video from the landfill and saw the workers drive away with their haul. City officials say they still don’t
know what happened to the beer.

When the sanitation workers were confronted on Monday, one quit, the Columbia Tribune reported. The other could face disciplinary action.

Buckler said it’s likely that at least one landfill employee was involved because “the assumption is that someone made a phone call.”

Once the beer was left at the landfill, it became city property. That means the city could be liable if the sanitation workers shared it with other people, Buckler said.

Scheppers President Joe Priesmeyer said the expired beer would not be a health concern, although it might have lost some of its taste. He said expired beer is usually dumped at the Scheppers’ plant unless there is too much for the company to handle.

Stuck suspect uses the ‘hide-and-seek’ defense
NORTH EAST, Md. (AP) — A burglary suspect came up with a creative explanation after he was found dangling from the ventilation system of a Maryland convenience store. He told police he was playing hide-and-seek.

Cecil County sheriff’s deputies said the owner of a BP convenience store in North East was opening up Wednesday morning when he spotted a pair of feet dangling from a duct. Deputies responded and freed a 20-year-old man.

Deputies said the man removed a ventilation cover and crawled through the vent before getting stuck and setting off a fire extinguisher that sprayed powder all over the store.

The man told deputies he was playing hide-and-seek on the roof with other adults and decided to hide in the ventilation system. He said the other players couldn’t figure out where he was and stopped looking for him

Woman reports finding python in hotel room
LA VISTA, Neb. (AP) — A woman reported finding a python in the toilet of her La Vista hotel room.

Officials with the Nebraska Human Society estimate the python found Thursday morning at the Hampton Inn was about 3 years old. They said pythons aren’t typically found in the wild, so it’s likely this python was a pet.

Hotel officials declined to comment.

Thieves take copper pipes from Baptist church in Wash.

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Tacoma police said thieves stole copper pipes from a church. KIRO-TV reported that members of Grace Missionary Baptist Church were preparing for a mens’ breakfast Friday night when they noticed the toilets weren’t flushing. There was also no water from the faucets.

Parishioner Dan Gardner said they could hear water somewhere. But when he looked under the church’s crawl space, he discovered that all the copper pipes had been taken.
