Today's Highlight in History: On April 11, 1970, Apollo 13, with astronauts James A. Lovell, Fred W. Haise and Jack Swigert, blasted off on its ill-fated mission to the moon. (Although the spacecraft was crippled when an oxygen tank ruptured in mid-flight, the crew managed to return safely.)

Ten years ago: Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak met with President Bill Clinton at the White House in what a senior U.S. official described as a good, productive, serious discussion.

Five years ago: During a meeting at his Texas ranch, President George W. Bush told Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon he could not allow further West Bank settlement growth and said Israeli and Palestinian doubts about each other were hampering peace prospects.

AP Odd News
Woman gets the feds’ goat for bogus claim
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Take note: Selling goats and collecting workers comp don't mix. An upstate New York woman faces up to five years in prison and a fine up to $250,000 after admitting she sold goats while collecting more than $60,000 in workers compensation.

Susan Tansosch pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to making false statements to the U.S. Department of Labor.
In the plea announced Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Richard Hartunian said Tansosch collected the benefits after she told authorities she wasn't making money from other employment.

She was selling goats near Syracuse.

Tansosch, 53, was to be sentenced Aug. 4.

A message left at a listing for Tansosch was not returned Tuesday.

Suspicious package contains statuette and a book
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) - A suspicious package caused a 45-minute shutdown of part of the Oak Ridge Turnpike before it was found to be a gesture of gratitude.

Fire officials said someone left a wrapped package Friday outside of Fire Station No. 2, sending firefighters and police officers into an alert state.

According to The Oak Ridger newspaper, a Knoxville bomb squad arrived and took X-rays of the package. Businesses in the area were alerted to keep their employees indoors and stay away from office windows.

The package turned out to be a 10-inch statuette of a firefighter and an inspirational book titled "Experiencing God Day by Day."

Man helps himself to free burrito and goes to jail
HASTINGS, Mich. (AP) - Authorities said a man took a bite into crime when he helped himself to a burrito and a bag of Funyuns snacks at a gas station food store in Hastings, then told the clerk to call police because he had no money to pay.

Barry County Prosecutor Tom Evans said 28-year-old Michael Odell was charged with retail fraud.

Odell, who told police he is homeless, has been jailed on a $2,000 bond with a pretrial hearing set for May 4.

Evans said Odell ate the burrito and Funyuns on Saturday morning, then had the cashier call police. The prosecutor said Odell told officers he had spent his money at a tavern in the city 35 miles west of Lansing.

Jail records say Odell didn't have an attorney as of Wednesday.

Penguin parents adopt another zoo's chick
DENVER (AP) - African penguins have adopted a chick that had trouble hatching, then wasn't being cared for by its biological parents at another Colorado zoo.

Officials at the Denver Zoo, the chick's new home, say it's doing well.

The baby African penguin emerged from its shell at the Pueblo Zoo on March 20, but it was four days overdue and needed help from a staff worker to get out.

When the biological parents appeared unable to care for the hatchling, it was taken to Denver and placed with surrogate parents, who immediately began to feed it and keep it warm.

African penguins once came close to extinction and are listed as "vulnerable" by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
