Be vigilant

April 1 is a day when some people play practical jokes on friends and family. Asbestos can play a not-so-funny practical joke, too.
April 1 was National Asbestos Disease Awareness Day.

There are more than 10 separate diseases/conditions that are directly linked to asbestos exposure.

Perhaps you have seen the attorneys' TV advertisements for people diagnosed with mesothelioma. People (mostly men) are diagnosed each year.

Merlin Olsen is the latest well-known victim to die from mesothelioma. He was exposed during his youth. The asbestos was dormant for decades and then the symptoms appeared. Most victims die within a year.

What can we do?

Continue to monitor your environment for products containing asbestos. While progress has been made, there are still older homes and buildings that have asbestos.

Some of the debris from the Twin Towers contained asbestos (as well as other dangerous chemicals).

Keep pressure on elected officials to totally outlaw imported products containing asbestos, plus any that are still made within the United States.

As you may have guessed, this is a personal cause for me. My husband Carl died in 2002 from asbestos exposure during his days in the Navy.

Please be vigilant.
