Bring California back from the brink

A generation ago, California's government spent about half what it does today, after adjusting for both inflation and population growth.

And yet, we had the finest highway system in the world and the finest public school system in the country. California offered a free university education to every Californian who wanted one. We produced water and electricity so cheaply that many communities didn't bother to meter it. Our unemployment rate consistently ran well below the national rate and our diversified economy was nearly recession-proof.

One thing - and one thing only - has changed in those years: public policy. One side gradually gained dominance over Sacramento and imposed a disastrous agenda that has destroyed the quality of life which Californians once took for granted.

The Census Bureau reports that in the last two years, almost a million more people have moved out of California than have moved into it. Many are leaving for dustbowls like Nevada, Arizona and Texas.

Why?

Because of smaller government in those places. Arizona's legislature spends $1,929 per resident. California's legislature spends $2,539 per resident - one third more.

Other states spend less, educate their kids more and provide better services, a lower tax burden, a friendly business climate and a less-intrusive government where their people are freer and wealthier and their economies are stronger. That's without all the beaches, ports, Central Valley agriculture, Hollywood, Silicon Valley, finance, industry, tourism, diverse natural beauty, temperate weather and all the rest that blesses this state above all others.

That, my fellow Californians, is a tragedy. And it's time to stop it.

It's time to stop believing in the Democrats' pipe dreams and disastrous feel-good/free-lunch ideas and bring California back from the brink.
