The Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce has appointed Ed Masterson as the interim replacement for president and CEO Larry Mankin, who last week announced his retirement.

Masterson is leaving his job as field representative for Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, a position he's held for about three years, and coming on board with the chamber May 3.

"It came together pretty fast," Masterson, 51, said Monday. "Larry did an amazing job."

Masterson said his goal is to maintain the momentum Mankin helped create.

Given the tough economic climate, he said he also wants to maintain personal connections with Chamber members and let them know they matter.

A 22-year resident of the valley, Masterson sat on the Chamber board for six years, and was the board chair in 2005.
"He has a great connection in the community," board member Dana Cop said. "We had a few candidates in mind. We needed somebody familiar with the community."

Later this year, Cop said, the Chamber will begin looking for a permanent replacement for Mankin.

Masterson said it will not be difficult to make the transition to working for the Chamber from working for Smyth.

"Cameron is great about letting us be involved in community things," he said, and added he will be traveling in circles similar to those in which he's already involved.

Before working for Smyth, Masterson worked in real estate and had spent several years as director of sales and marketing for Golden West K-9, a private security company.
