What a mistake on The Signal’s part

The Signal editorial (“Look out for criminally misleading junk mail,” Feb. 28) stated that you will open your mailbox and there screaming at you will be a obnoxious piece of junk mail with the Signal headline, “Crime on the Rise in SCV,” complete with the subtext: 2009 saw an increase in reports of several serious crimes...”

Then, the editorial states it will have come from a disingenuous Santa Clarita City Council candidate and no name was given, so that clouds all candidates and no incumbents.

I cannot imagine anyone in journalism even writing such a piece, so I called The Signal myself to see if there was a copy of the mailer.

I was told by Executive Editor Lila Littlejohn that this editorial was The Signal’s angle to prevent a hit mailer, and no actual mailer has been produced as of this date to their knowledge.

In my opinion, this is The Signal’s poor attempt to put a cloud of dishonesty on the candidates, then paint the incumbents as doing a great job by stating that the City Council is responsible for spending money inside the city limits where crime is down.

Crime in the city of Santa Clarita has gone up in seven out of the eight categories.

Grand theft auto, the eighth category, has gone down enough to outweigh the rise in human crimes like homicide, rape and arson.
Therefore, you can see category crime has gone down, but human violation crime is up.

Personally, I see a crime of human violation much more dangerous than auto theft, so why not compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges?
