Your parents taught you wrong

Today, March 11, the Treasury Department announced that the budget deficit for the month of February alone was $221 billion, up 14 percent over last February.

Some context: In fiscal year 2007, the last time the Republicans controlled both houses of Congress and the presidency, the deficit for the entire year was $168 billion. Promising fiscal restraint, Democrats then took control of both houses of Congress. The next year's deficit rose to $458 billion.

The next year, with the Democrats controlling both houses of Congress and the presidency, it rose to $1.4 trillion. The next year, it will be somewhat north of $1.6 trillion. And that's before the health care debacle hits the books.

The Democrats who grace this page offer one version or another of the argument, "don't blame us; Bush spent too much, too."

It seems that Democrats have a new take on what all our parents taught us: two wrongs do make a right.

As Mark Steyn asks, "How's that hopey-changy thing working out for you?"
