Welcome to summer in Santa Clarita

It’s been a crazy June! Where was the gloom? Well, we are past the summer solstice (June 21) with the longest day of the year — now each day will start to get shorter until winter solstice (Dec. 21).

Oh! What a night! (An Evening Under the Oaks)
The Santa Clarita Symphony knows how to throw a party! Last weekend’s “Evening Under the Oaks” was one of those amazing evenings (despite the heat) when you know you’ve experienced something special. Held at Mayor Bob Kellar’s rustic Placerita Canyon home, the evening featured amazing music courtesy of the Gary McGrath Project (Symphony musicians Miyuki Nakashima and Philip Vaiman also performed with the band) and incredible food from the Thousand Oaks Meat Locker BBQ. I’m a huge BBQ fan — and this ranked among the best BBQ I’ve ever tasted. Among the highlights of the evening was Alan Cameron sitting in with the band (which featured Gary McGrath, Tim Bogert, Bryan Head and Phil Parlapiano) and playing his conga drums. A real treat was listening to Nakashima, Vaiman, guitarist Michael Lyn and The Signal’s Stephen K. Peeples on drums, performing an impromptu jam.

Seen at Evening Under the Oaks:
Dianne and Wayne Crawford, Bruce Fortine and Gloria Mercado, Erica Betz and Bill Cloyd, Michele Mann and Steve Meta, Michelle and John Dow, Kathy Keysor Smith and Bob Kellar, Oscar Dominguez, Barbara Myler, Alan Cameron, Sandy Fisher, Robert Lawson, Adam Philipson, Michael Lyn, Stacey House and Cathy and Bill Kennedy.

Santa Clarita Symphony at Concerts in the Park
Head over to Central Park (off Bouquet Canyon Road) on Saturday, July 5 as the Symphony salutes the great American musical featuring songs from Rogers and Hammerstein, Bernstein and Sondheim, along with Tin Pan Alley composers George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. Also, a patriotic music salute with marches from John Philip Sousa.

Art Garfunkel with the Santa Clarita Symphony
The Santa Clarita Symphony has announced its upcoming season with includes not only the July 5 Concerts in the Park appearance, but an evening with Art Garfunkel on Jan. 11. The season concludes with the annual Family Concert on April 19. For more information on programs, fundraisers and opportunities to support the Symphony visit www.scsymphony.com or call (661) 284-6044.

SCV Fourth of July Parade
There is no better place to be on the Fourth of July than in the Santa Clarita Valley. The annual Fourth of July Parade, organized by the Fourth of July Parade committee hosts one of the best “home town” parades in Southern California. Claim your spot on the sidewalk and watch the parade go by beginning at 9:45 a.m. The parade travels north along Main Street in downtown Newhall, turns west on Lyons Avenue, then north on Orchard Village Road, ending at 16th Street.

Fireworks Fun!
I love fireworks! The Westfield Town Center will again be the site for the city’s annual fireworks show beginning at 9:15 p.m. Traffic is a doozy, so be prepared to stay awhile after the show ends!

Happy Fourth of July Birthday Wishes
It’s my daughter’s birthday on the Fourth of July. Happy birthday, Cassie!
