Hearing set for college's grow plan

Plans to expand The Master’s College in Placerita Canyon will begin the public hearing process at a Santa Clarita Planning Commission meeting Tuesday.

City staff will present the commission with the 10-year master plan that calls for the extension of Dockweiler Drive and Deputy Jake Drive, along with a 55,000-square-foot chapel, two classrooms, expanded dorms and 54 condominium units.

About 90 percent of the expansion will occur on the south side of Placerita Canyon Road and 10 percent will occur north of the road. Extending Dockweiler would help divert traffic that currently goes through the canyon.

Deputy Jake Way will be extended and meet up with the extended Dockweiler at a new entrance of the school near the existing dorms.

The college has an enrollment of about 1,100 students and its maximum capacity is 1,700. The 54 multi-family residences will be on the north side of Deputy Jake Drive. Consultants have said the residential units will help offset the cost of the project.

Called Los Angeles Baptist College until 1985, the liberal arts school has been located in Placerita Canyon since the 1961. Prior to that the site was home to Happy Jack’s Dude Ranch.

The Planning Commission will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers of City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Blvd.
