Independence Day festivities have a rich history in the Santa Clarita Valley, dating to the first Fourth of July parade in 1932. Its theme? “Old Times.”

This year’s theme is “Sights and Sounds of Santa Clarita.” Here is a list of local events scheduled for Independence Day 2008:

 6 a.m. — The gates open at Castaic Lake for a daylong Independence Day celebration that culminates in a fireworks display over the water at 9 p.m. Car parking is expected to reach capacity at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

 6:30 a.m. — Registration begins for Independence Day Classic 5K race at Newhall Park. Kids’ K is at 8:30 a.m.; adult run/walk begins at 9 a.m.

 7-10:30 a.m. — Rotary Club pancake breakfast is held at Roger Dunn Golf parking lot on Main Street between 5th and 6th streets in Newhall.

 9:45 a.m. — Parade begins at Newhall Avenue and Main Street.

6 p.m. — Dinner is served in the parking lot of Whole Foods Market in Valencia. The meal is offered until 9 p.m. at $6 per person, and spectators are invited to stay to watch the fireworks show at nearby Westfield Town Center.

 8 p.m. — Independence Day festivities begin at Richard Rioux Park in Stevenson Ranch. Fireworks begin at 9:05 p.m.

 9:15 p.m. — Fireworks show begins at Westfield Town Center mall.

Six Flags Magic Mountain is not hosting a fireworks show this year.
