CLWA’s water cleanup

In the March 18 edition of The Signal, Cam Noltemeyer (“What is the county thinking?”) stated in regards to groundwater contaminated by chemicals from the Whittaker-Bermite site, that “cleanup facility should be operating before more new development is approved.”

Noltemeyer can rest assured that the groundwater treatment facility will be starting up in April — well in advance of any new development that would rely on that water. The treatment facilities are being operated by the Castaic Lake Water Agency and the process to bring them on line is being overseen by the California Department of Public Health.

Last but not least, the cost to treat the water will be borne by the past and current owners of the site, not by Santa Clarita Valley residents. This was made possible a few years ago by settlement of a lawsuit filed by the undersigned local water suppliers on behalf of our customers.

For more information on progress of both the soil and groundwater remediation effort, the public is welcome to attend quarterly meetings of the Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force for the Whittaker-Bermite Remediation and Reuse Project at the Santa Clarita City Hall, in the Century Conference Room. The next meeting is Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Attendance includes City Council members and city staff, local water supplier directors and staff, state Department of Toxic Substances Control and Department of Public Health staff and Whittaker-Bermite representatives and consultants.

For more information on SCV water supplies and issues, please contact your local water retailer or the Castaic Lake Water Agency.
