Thank you, Santa Clarita

On March 13, with heavy heart I had the privilege and honor of attending the funeral of my stepchildren's longtime friend and local hero, Sgt. Ian Gelig.

Gelig was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division stationed in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was killed March 1 at age 25, when a suicide bomber rammed his vehicle.

I want to thank the community of Santa Clarita for the heartwarming and emotionally overwhelming display of support shown to the family and friends of Gelig.

Community members lined the streets to offer support, salutes, flags and respect as the funeral procession made its way to Gelig's final resting place. I have never witnessed a community come together in such a fashion, in many instances for someone whom the participants did not even know.

Gelig received the hero's acknowledgment that all U.S. servicemen deserve.

We grieve at the premature loss of such a young and promising human being. Strangely, I have also never been prouder to be an American.

Thank you, Santa Clarita.
