Diane Hamburger, who has been a science teacher at Saugus High School since 1989, has been named the school's new assistant principal.

The William. S. Hart Union High School District Governing Board confirmed the appointment at Wednesday's meeting, and it will be effective July 1. Hamburger attended the meeting with her husband, Mark, their daughter, Nicole, and their twin sons, Jonathan and Jason.

"Diane is a veteran teacher at Saugus High School and is very well known for her expertise in curriculum - particularly in science and math," Rochelle Neal, assistant superintendent of human resources, told the board.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Hamburger has occasionally served as a substitute administrator at Saugus since 2002.

She also served as a summer school administrative intern at Hart High School in 2003.

Hamburger earned her bachelor's degree in education at Concordia Teachers College. She earned her master's degree in educational services with an administrative credential from the University of LaVerne.

Known for her innovative methods of teaching hands-on science, Hamburger has been a mentor in the district's support program for beginning teachers.

She was Teacher of the Year for Saugus High in 2004 and has served as science department chair at Saugus for 10 years.

She has also helped develop new curriculum for chemistry, earth science and physical science classes in the Hart district.

"I am confident that Diane's successful experiences in the classroom, the multiple leadership roles she has held, and her warm personality make her a natural fit for this position at Saugus High School," Neal said.
