If you must have a picture of the author of the story, I would recommend that it be at the bottom of the story.
I have had conversations with other residents who agree that on more than one occasion we have assumed the picture of the author is the person being discussed in the article.
Editor's note: The Signal runs thumbnail-sized photos alongside bylines because we feel that putting a face with a writer's name helps to make the stories more personal and encourages reader response and participation. Having our writers' photos accompany their stories also adds a level of accountability to their writing. Photos accompanying the story are always larger than the writers' photos. In addition, this format is commonly found on other newspapers' Web sites.
