AP odd news
State drink: Milk or cider?
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Apples are getting some competition from cows in the debate over what New Hampshire’s state drink should be — cider or milk.

The House will weigh in this week when it votes on a bill designating apple cider as the state drink.

A lawmaker introduced the bill after Jaffrey Grade School students contacted her. Later, Gilford Elementary School students lobbied for milk.

The House Environment and Agriculture Committee is split. Some members support cider while others propose killing the bill.

Critics point out milk also is important to New Hampshire, whose state fruit is the pumpkin and whose state animal is the white-tail deer.

The New Hampshire Farm Bureau says the state has 3,400 commercial farms producing a wide variety of conventional bulk commodity crops — most significantly milk and apples.

Police: Man, 77, ate hidden pot stash in squad car

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Police in Iowa City accused a 77-year-old man they arrested on traffic charges earlier this year of swallowing his hidden marijuana stash while seated in a squad car. Authorities served an arrest warrant on misdemeanor marijuana charges Thursday on Howard Switzer, and later released him on his own recognizance.

Police said they observed Switzer making an illegal left turn on Jan. 31 and arrested him for driving with a revoked license. They say that while Switzer was in the back of the squad car, he reached into a coat pocket, pulled out a plastic tube containing marijuana and swallowed most of the contents. They said he also dropped the tube and a glass marijuana pipe on the floor of the car.

Authorities said Switzer has two previous marijuana convictions.

Cashier, 91, finishes shift after being punched
EAST NORTHPORT, N.Y. (AP) — A 91-year-old New York pharmacy cashier refused medical attention and went back to work after a thief punched her. Florence Critelli grabbed the man’s hand and screamed when he reached over and grabbed cash from her cash register at the Rite Aid in East Northport on Long Island. He punched her in the chest, knocking her down, before fleeing. “He hit me good,” Critelli said.

But she refused to leave work early. She said she didn’t want to just “sit there and be bored.”

After finishing her shift Thursday, she insisted on driving herself home.

Critelli, who has seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, said if police catch the guy, she wants to “smack him.”

Devotees of Fla. man drank snail mucus in ritual

MIAMI (AP) — Devotees of a Miami man who claims to practice a traditional African religion say they were sickened when they drank the mucus of a giant African snail.

Federal authorities in January raided Charles L. Stewart’s home after receiving complaints.

Stewart has not been criminally charged, but prosecutors and state and federal wildlife agencies are investigating. The giant African snail is prohibited in the U.S. without special approval.

Experts say it devastates new ecosystems. The snail grows up to 10 inches long, can reproduce on its own and even can even eat plaster.

Followers said they got violently ill, losing weight and developing strange lumps in their stomachs.
