Saugus Ryan Zirbel runs the ball down the field past an Eastside High School player, during last Friday night's passing tournament in Central Park.

Football teams across the Foothill League will be competing in passing tournaments this weekend.

Hart and Valencia will participate in the Air Assault Passing Tournament at Bonita High School today and Saturday, starting at 3 p.m.

Thirty teams in all are in the tournament including Westlake, Charter, Upland, Damien, Corona, Bishop Amat, Los Osos and Diamond Bar.

Today's pool play will determine the seeding for Saturday's tournament action. Carson and Beverly Hills, two teams known to do well in passing tournaments, are in the same pool as the Indians squad.

Hart, competing for the 10th year in this event, will be without wide receivers Demitri Diamond, who is nursing a back ailment, and Brendan Cox.

Cox injured his shoulder on Saturday during the Saugus Passing Tournament. Hart High head football coach Mike Herrington said with the injuries to key players, the rest of the squad will have to look to do more.

"We hope to play well," Herrington said. "We have a lot of kids that are banged up and hurt and we might have a few guys going both ways."

Spenser Souza and Darren Sholes are vying to be the Indians' top signal caller. Herrington said that both Souza and Sholes have yet to prove who is most worthy of the job.

"No one has stepped forward and outshined the other," he said. "Both have been good at time and both have struggled at times."

Meanwhile, Canyon will be playing in the Conejo Passing Tournament. The Cowboys, led by quarterback Jordan Adamczyk, took the tournament crown over Oaks Christian in 2006.

Oaks Christian defeated Canyon in Saturday's "Under the Lights" Passing League Tournament.

Canyon, however, was without top receiver Kevin Voogt. Voogt was out of action due to a groin injury.

Saugus, coming off a consolation semifinals loss to Palmdale at the "Under the Lights" tournament, will be competing in the Westlake Passing Tournament.

West Ranch's squad will be at the College of the Canyons Passing Tournament. The Wildcats competed in a lower eight-team consolation tournament in the Saugus Passing League tournament and finished the weekend 1-1.

Golden Valley played a passing league game Thursday against West Ranch at home and plays on Tuesday, with Verdugo Hills and Vazquez High of Acton coming to the Grizzlies' home field.
