WASHINGTON, D.C - Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (CA-25) today released the following statement in support of the earmark moratorium adopted by the House Republican Conference today:

"Over the years there has been a growing need for major reform of the earmark process in Washington, D.C., but this year in particular, after watching House Democrats spend flagrantly - driving the country into trillions of dollars of debt, it became undeniable that House Republicans would need to take a hard stand for change.

"Today, I strongly supported a vote by the House Republican Conference to ban all earmarks for the 111th Congress. This is an important step for reining in out-of-control government spending and changing the culture of Washington. By adopting a unilateral ban on all earmarks, we are sending a clear message to the American taxpayers that we have heeded their call.

"As the Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee as well, one of our top priorities is to provide for the common defense of our great nation and to support the men and women of our military with the same dedication they have committed to protecting us.

"As we begin the process of crafting the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2011, we will not be a rubber stamp for the Administration. We will continue our oversight activities and closely scrutinize the Administration's budget request to ensure we provide our troops the tools and support they require to carry out their missions and return safely."
