Roderick Butler, 24, of Canyon Country, was arrested this morning by detectives from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station's burglary team and charged with burglary, possession of a concealed weapon and possession of stolen property.

Detectives went to the 18000 block of Annes Circle, Canyon Country, this morning to contact Butler, a person of interest in recent burglaries.

They located Butler outside the apartment in which he keeps his property and tried to make contact. When Butler saw the detectives he ran into the apartment complex to avoid being caught.

The detective who saw Butler run also saw that Butler was carrying a handgun in his waist band.

Detectives called for patrol units to contain the area. More than 20 deputies responded to the area and worked to locate Butler. Sheriff's K-9 units responded with search dogs and a scent dog for an article search. A helicopter circled overhead for at least an hour. The K-9 units were unable to locate the suspect or his weapon.

Search teams were organized and deputies on the search team located Butler around noon. He was hiding in a garage. He was no longer carrying the handgun, but deputies were able to locate the weapon in a hiding place inside the apartment he was associated with. The gun, a small semi-automatic handgun, was a stolen handgun out of Glendale.

After his arrest, Butler was transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Butler has been connected to two burglaries committed in the area of unincorporated Canyon Country in the past month. The investigation into any additional burglaries in which he might have been involved is continuing.
