Washington, D.C.-U.S. Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (R-Calif.), the Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement congratulating Iraqis for their embrace of democracy and rejection of violence as a political tool:

"Millions of Iraqis braved bombs, mortars, and other terrorist attacks yesterday so they could have a say in Iraq's future. By showing resilience and unwavering courage in the face of violence, Iraqis turned out and voted in a watershed election that will determine the future of their country.

"The weeks and months ahead will reveal whether Iraq can overcome ethnic and sectarian divisions, sustain stability and take the next steps toward building a peaceful, productive country in the heart of the Middle East. Once the election results are validated, it is incumbent upon those elected to work together to form a government that is representative of all Iraqi parties and sectarian groups. Hopefully, this process will be swift and credible in the eyes of most Iraqis.

"It'll be important in the near future for the President and his administration to step up its engagement with the Iraqis to ensure a smooth transition to the new government. This includes carefully reviewing the pace of the upcoming U.S. troop withdrawal if conditions on the ground change. Persistent engagement with Iraq will also help drive a long-term security partnership between our two countries."
