A realist, not a racist

I guess there are a few points I agree on with Mitch Bruckner ("Not so fast, Reza," March 5).

I do also believe Bob Kellar is a good man and it has been a silly debate over his comments. Looking at the big picture of illegal immigration itself, however, I would like to respond to Bruckner's comments.

Medical services? Numerous studies indicate that illegal immigration is a huge factor in emergency rooms being shut down across our country due to free delivery of "anchor" babies, as well as seeking medical help for anything from gunshot wounds to hangnails and sniffles.

Should we be paying for these services for illegal immigrants and then losing those vital services for our citizens? It's sad to think of many of our citizens who are struggling to make ends meet who wouldn't dream of making a trip to the emergency room due to the financial hardship.

Financial Benefits? There are many who profit from the illegal drug trade, and prostitution and pornography as well. Does that make it right? Have you heard some of the staggering numbers that have been compiled over the years as to what illegal immigration costs us?

In years past, it's estimated that illegal immigration ran between $11 billion and $70 billion annually in prison costs, welfare fraud, free school programs and free medical care, among other items. Recent estimates put it at $7 billion annually in California alone.

I'd say that's pretty darn significant.

Yes, we do have a broken political system. There are numerous issues to conquer. They each need fixing individually - but we can't just point our fingers at "the big, bad system."

Let's rally for some serious change, issue by issue, where we possibly can.

I understand many immigrants are coming here to escape poverty and oppression in their native lands. It's heartbreaking, but the numbers and impact on our country have gotten out of control.

I do respect Bruckner's opinion and I recognize that illegal immigration isn't the only problem in our great nation. However, it is a very significant one that carries even greater weight here in California.

As a nation, we have been very generous but we are being taken advantage of. We need to stop apologizing for it and take action now!

Signed, a realist, not a racist.
