The Saugus Union School District is collecting memorabilia from throughout its 100-year history to display during a centennial celebration scheduled for October.

The K-6 school district plans to celebrate by collecting memories of its history and holding a community-wide commemorative event on Oct. 26. In addition to saving the date, alumni, former employees and others who have been associated with the district are invited to share their memories and memorabilia with Saugus school officials to be included in the celebration.

To commemorate the district's first 100 years, an outdoor festival and day of celebration is planned. At booths representing each of the district's schools, the history of each school since it was built will be displayed with timelines, photos and memorabilia. Throughout the day, students will perform reenactments of events, speeches and Saugus history on stage. Food and beverages, a booth where former Saugus district students and employees can meet, student art and music, and contests are also among the planned activities.

The district is hoping to find all former students living in the area to include their names in its Centennial Hall of Fame. In addition, those with photos, memorabilia or memories they wish to share about Saugus, its schools and history are encouraged to either register on the district blog at http://www.saugus.k12.ca.us/ or contact a principal at one of the district's schools.

The district, founded in 1908 - the year the Model T Ford went into production - began in a single New England-style schoolhouse on donated farmland and today includes 15 schools and 11,000 students. The Oct. 26 event will be held 1-4 p.m. at Bridgeport Park.
