Meeting planned for Benz Road

Santa Clarita traffic engineers are looking at all possible solutions for the traffic problems on Benz Road in Saugus and plan to hold a public meeting later this summer to present the solutions to the residents, officials said this week.

Benz Road sits between Copper Hill Drive and Bouquet Canyon Road and residents see thousands using Benz Road and some of the surrounding streets as a shortcut between the two major roads.

The city responded by conducting traffic studies and posted turn restrictions during peak hours, added stop signs, modified striping, and reset speed and weight limits. The improvements helped, but the problem is still there, residents say.

City Manager Ken Pulskamp said at Tuesday's City Council meeting that the city plans to hold that neighborhood meeting in late July or early August.

"We've discussed a broad range of potential traffic calming issues that may or ay not be viable for the Benz Road neighborhood. What we're trying to do is list all of the potential solutions we can think of. "Our goal will be to come up something that a greater percentage of the people are supportive of."

After presenting the information to residents, Pulskamp will discuss the results at a City Council meeting in September.

Across town in Canyon Country, the residents living on Linda Vista Street and Canvas Street are facing similar problems when motorists use their streets as shortcuts between Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road.

They have already asked the city for help and the city changed some of the street signs, modified the striping and beefed up police enforcement.

Pulskamp has recommended the council hold off on deciding anything until the city comes up with a solution for Benz Road, which could include changing the city's policies when it comes to the city's response to such issues.
