Drunk drivers beware

Officers from the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area will set up a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County starting 8:30 p.m. today through 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Motorists will be diverted into a marked lane and detained while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.

The goal is to create awareness and keep the roads safe. Checkpoints tend to reduce the number of drunk drivers on the roads, authorities said.

According to the 2008 Statewide Traffic Records System, 790 people were killed in California where the primary collision factor was alcohol-related. Police made more than 217,000 alcohol-related arrests statewide the same year.
