Republican support of troops a sham

A lot of folks like to say that the Republicans support the military.

June 15 marked the 76th anniversary of the 1932 Republican-controlled Senate's rejection of the Patnam Bonus Bill, which would have paid earlier bonuses to the veteran soldiers of World War I then suffering starvation in the Great Depression.

The 17,000 vets who sacrificed so much on the meat-grinding battlefields of France went with their families to the Capitol that summer looking for help from their Republican-led federal government.

Under fixed Army bayonets and under orders from Republican President Hoover, the vets and their families were force-marched out of Washington. During the destruction of the camp, several vets were killed and a mother miscarried.

Fast forward to 2008: We are five years into another Republican-led war, where billions of dollars have gone to highly paid mercenary groups like Blackwater and gold-plated gym equipment for the TSA department, but very little has gone into supporting our military with proper supplies and facilities (not including the $45 case of soda, or the poisonous bottled water, lack of body armor etc.).

And even after the continuous scandals at the V.A. hospitals and thousands of vets suffering from combat stress disorders, the Republicans in Congress still want to deny proper funding for our returning veterans who deserve FULL medical care without hassles of corporate/bureaucratic-inspired red tape, and FULL assistance from a new GI bill as they try to re-assimilate into a down-turned, overseas-outsourced economy.

Republicans say they support the man in uniform? It's time for them to prove it.
