The Santa Clarita City Council gave city staff the go-ahead to begin Phase III of the Intelligent Transportation System at its Feb. 23 regular city council meeting.

The state-of-the-art program will allow traffic engineers to continue to monitor and modify signalized intersections across the city for smoother traffic flow.

Many Intelligent Transportation System improvements are already in place across the city, including the city's Traffic Operations Center. Phase III of the project will connect these improvements and implement a new program called "TrafficInfo," which will provide real-time traffic updates such as speed conditions, delays, closures and more directly through the city's Web site.

"City of Santa Clarita traffic engineers constantly monitor local traffic conditions via the Traffic Operations Center to ensure residents enjoy a smoother driving experience," Mayor Laurene Weste said. "Phase III of the Intelligent Transportation System will implement powerful tools which will fully link components already in place to the city's Traffic Operations Center."

The Intelligent Transportation System is largely funded through the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority grants, with Phase III of the program funded through a state Traffic Light Synchronization Program grant.
