McKeon calls health care summit 'a PR stunt'

WASHINGTON, D.C - Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (CA-25) issued the following statement late Thursday afternoon after the White House hosted a health care "summit" with members of Congress:

"Today's health care summit offered a real opportunity for discussion, but sadly, it became nothing more than a PR stunt. The latest health care plan is the same big-government scheme that the American people overwhelmingly reject. In fact, a recent CNN poll found that 73 percent of Americans say lawmakers should work on an entirely new bill or stop all work.

"This new plan will increase government spending, raise taxes, kill jobs, and provide taxpayer-funding of abortion. How can they believe ramming this bill through Congress is the right thing to do? Why are Democrats completely ignoring the will of the American people?

"We need real reform of the health care system, which lowers costs and improves access to affordable health care. California needs for this to be comprehensive reform, which includes allowing health insurance competition across state lines and tort reform.

"Every citizen should learn everything they can about the proposals out there. You can find the Republican plan at healthcare.gop.gov. I am also regularly updating my Web site with facts, figures regarding the Democrats' plan and encourage people to read more about it at mckeon.house.gov.

"The Democrats' health care proposal and the job-killing agenda are squeezing America dry. The path we are currently on is unsustainable and adding a trillion dollar government-lead health care plan to an already weakened economy goes against commonsense."
