It's well known that if you want a beautiful house you need a good foundation. The same holds true for a beautiful brain as well as a beautiful character. For women to look beautiful, a good foundation is key.

Senna Cosmetics, founded by Santa Clarita Valley resident Eugenia Weston, offers a custom blended foundation that hydrates without oils and helps smooth and protect the skin with natural botanicals and antioxidant vitamins A,C and E.

"We specialize in beauty here at Senna Cosmetics, that's what we do, total beauty from the brows to the entire face," said Weston. "So we want to start with a great foundation because if your foundation isn't right, all the colors you put on top won't look right."

Senna offers a personalized foundation matching session that takes about 15 minutes.

"We keep the customer's unique formula on file so it is easy to get a refill," said Weston.

The custom foundation is water-based, fragrance-free and paraben-free.

"We believe in natural," said Weston.

In keeping with the "all natural" ingredients in the foundation there is no sunscreen. An ounce of custom blended foundation at Senna retails for $35.

"I don't put fragrances or sunscreens in my foundation because some people are allergic to those ingredients and I want everyone to be able to wear my foundation," she said.

The foundation is also made with glycerin to hydrate and smooth the skin; squalane, an olive derivative, that adds softness to the skin; aloe vera to hydrate and soothe skin and hyaluronic acid to moisturize and soothe skin.

"This is a new, amazing formula we've developed that is really good for the skin," she said. "We've been around for a long time and people trust our products, so I only use the highest-quality ingredients."

Weston said a custom-blended foundation is important for fair skin and darker skinned women because commercial makeups don't offer the correct colors.

"You can't find colors," she said. "Especially for fair women, the color usually turns orange. That's why we custom blend, we get it right every time. I've been blending custom foundations since I started the line in 1976. We have been doing custom-blended foundations for a long, long time."

Weston said that because she's a professional makeup artist, it's important hat the foundation looked perfect.

"I like the foundation to look like you, like your second skin," she said.

Weston is a graduate of William S. Hart High School and the first licensed makeup artist in the state of California. She found her passion for makeup as a teenager working the cosmetics counter at the Thrifty Drug Store on Lyons Avenue in Newhall.

Weston also offered some important makeup tips:
When applying foundation make sure your skin is hydrated. "Foundation works best when the skin is hydrated," Weston said. "Prepping the skin is very important."

Weston also stressed the importance of using a primer. "Our secret weapon is primer," she said. "You put this on over moisturizer and it holds your foundation on. Priming is important."

Weston said she invented her primer after working in television, film and on fashion runway shows to help keep makeup in place.

"If the makeup doesn't stay then you're touching up the actors all day," she said.

"Setting" the finished makeup look with a clear, transparent powder is also important.

In addition to the custom foundation Senna offers the unique "Form-a-brow" kit that Weston invented. Senna also offers a full line of makeup and lessons on how to perfectly apply makeup like a professional.

"We really believe in eyebrows," said Weston. "Eyebrows and foundation are essential. We specialize in eyebrows."

Wedding makeup, lash tinting, facial waxing and bleaching, threading, brow shaping, "red carpet" makeup and custom makeup consultations are also available. Appointments are required for all services.

"We believe in bringing the beauty that is on the inside to the outside," Weston said. "We are really into the art of makeup and the art of beauty for each individual customer."
