Saugus boys basketball was the Jekyll and Hyde team of the Foothill League in 2010.

Luckily for the Centurions, they're out of the Foothill League and Jekyll turned up again.

Saugus upset ninth-seeded Cypress 79-69 in overtime in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division IIAA playoffs on Wednesday night at Cypress High.

"The good thing about the playoffs is no one knows us," said Saugus head coach Derek Ballard. "We just played well. We plan on continuing to play well in the playoffs."

The game was tied 64-64 at the end of regulation, but Saugus outscored the Cypress Centurions 15-5 in the extra frame.

Saugus started the overtime on a 7-0 run.

The Saugus Centurions received a boost from a trio of players.

Joey Fredrick scored 25 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Saugus point guard Jawhar Purdy nearly had a triple-double with 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

Jeremy Gatewood added 11 points and five assists.

Cypress was led by Jimmy Jackson, who scored 24 points.

Ballard said his team did a solid job shutting down the smaller Cypress team, which he added had five good shooters on the court the whole time and pressed Saugus throughout.

Saugus jumped out to a 27-13 lead, but saw its lead shrink in the third quarter as it got sloppy with the ball.

The Centurions trailed 64-62 with less than a minute to play, but Purdy found Jon Grisanti for the game-tying layup.

Then Saugus took over in overtime.

The Centurions will play the winner of the Sunny Hills-Temecula Valley game on Friday night.

If Saugus gets Sunny Hills, the game will be played at Saugus High.
