The Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball team defeated New Harvest Christian 68-44 on Wednesday night in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VIAA playoffs.

The Cardinal offense got off to a sluggish start, but began clicking late in the first half.

"It can be difficult to prevent yourself from playing down to the level of your opponents sometimes, and I think that was the case early on," said SCCS head coach James Mosley.

While the offense struggled early, the Cardinals' defense was stifling the entire game, forcing numerous turnovers and upsetting its opponents' offensive rhythm.

"The defense set up the offense in this game," said SCCS guard Brett Ranhofer, who led all scorers with 24 points. "I think eventually our play on defense gave us a lot of confidence and energy on the offensive side of the ball."

The Cardinals ultimately sealed the victory when they ended the third quarter on a 16-5 run, which allowed many bench players valuable playing time.

"It is always good to have solid bench play so we don't have to rely too heavily on our starters," Mosley said.

In addition to Ranhofer, standout guard/forward Davion Cotterell put up 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

The Cardinals face the winner of the game between North County Christian and Cornerstone Christian on Friday night.
