Gutman views history without facts

Anti-Catholicism appears to be alive and well, as witnessed in the hateful and ignorant commentary by W.E. Gutman (“Rewarding silence filled with guilt,” Feb. 7).

Gutman attacked Pope Benedict XVI for supporting the proposed canonization of Pope Pius XII, who was pontiff from 1939 until his death in 1958.

Gutman claimed that Pius did not do enough to help Jews during the Holocaust.

Gutman should know that many respected Jewish leaders and intellectuals such as Albert Einstein, Israeli prime ministers Golda Meir and Moshe Sharett and Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog publicly praised Pope Pius XII for saving thousands of Jews during the Holocaust.

Israeli historian and diplomat Pinchas Lapide in his book “Three Popes and the Jews” concluded that Pius XII “was instrumental in saving at least 700,000 but probably as many as 860,000 Jews from certain death at Nazi hands.”

When Gutman refers to Pope Benedict as a “wounded reptile,” I know that he embraces the mantle of a far-left revisionist historian without regard for the facts.

By the way, Mr. Gutman, Catholics don’t adore saints. Catholics adore God and venerate the saints.
